Lake Kissimmee
Lake Kissimmee in Central Florida near Orlando is the anchor of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, which includes Lake Hatchineha, Lake Cypress, and Lake Toho. At 35,000 acres with a maximum depth of 12 feet and an average depth of 5 feet Lake Kissimmee is the 3rd largest lake in Florida. This remote undeveloped fertile lake has abundant aquatic vegetation consisting of maidencane, Kissimmee grass, Pickerelweed, torpedograss, lily pads, eelgrass, and hydrilla. These plants provide cover and spawning habitat for Lake Kissimmee’s trophy bass.
South of Lake Toho, Lake Kissimmee is historically one of the best Largemouth Bass lakes in the country. The headwaters of the Florida Everglades this Central Florida bass fishing gem has produced more then Ten Thousand trophy bass over 10 pounds as well as many major tournament wins. Camp Mack’s River Resort on the near by Kissimmee River frequently hosts professional bass fishing tournaments for B.A.S.S, F.L.W Outdoors, and several other organizations. This Kissimmee River location provides easy access to Lake Kissimmee, Lake Hatchineha, Lake Cypress, and Lake Toho. One of the reasons for continued productivity on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes is fabulous lake management which includes periodic draw downs to clean muck off of the bottom and restore native plants and grasses.
The 2006 Bassmaster Classic took place on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. The tournament launched out of Kissimmee Lakefront Park on the north end of Lake Toho. There were many Trophy bass caught in Lake Toho but the top five finishers including the winner made the long run each day to the south end of Lake Kissimmee. During the 2008 Bassmaster Elite Series Citrus Slam out of Camp Mack’s River Resort on the Kissimmee River many big bass were caught close by on Lake Kissimmee but the majority of the top ten finishers including the winner made the long run to Lake Toho. As a professional Orlando bass fishing guide and tournament angler this is a good example why I spend so much time on each of the lakes in the Kissimmee Chain. The entire chain is world famous for producing trophy bass and depending on many factors it will vary from day to day which lake has the hottest bite.
While Lake Kissimmee and Lake Toho receive most of the year round fishing pressure Lake Hatchineha and Lake Cypress can offer excellent trophy bass fishing as well. Lake Hatchineha is 6,500 acres with a variety of aquatic vegetation and beautiful cypress trees. Depending on the water level and how the vegetation grows this lake can be phenomenal. I always seem to find big bass for my clients sometime during the year on Lake Hatchineha. Lake Cypress is 4,000 acres and one of my favorite lakes on the Kissimmee Chain. The bulrush, cattails, kissimmee grass, lily pads and hydrilla can all hold giant bass. Each year Lake Cypress produces many trophy bass for my Orlando bass fishing clients.
