Snook

Snook are one of the most exciting inshore game fish to catch in East Central Florida. Their long hard runs, acrobatic jumping ability and willingness to take a variety of artificial and live baits make them a popular species. They can be caught year round in the warm waters of the Indian River, Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon.

Snook are restricted to tropical areas with warm water. They range south throughout the Caribbean to South America and north through Central Florida. Snook are considered an inshore fish but they can be found in salt or fresh water . They can migrate long distances up freshwater creeks which feed into the Indian River. I have personally seen and caught Snook while trophy Bass fishing on Lake Okeechobee. The same fishing tackle and techniques that are used for Largemouth Bass are often also used for Snook. An ambush predator the mighty Snook prefers structure such as mangroves, docks, and bridges.

When Snook are hooked they will immediately charge into nearby structure and try to cut your line off on any and every available snag. This combined with their razor sharp gill plates and extreme power will give you all you can handle. During your fishing charter we will be using light tackle spinning outfits spooled with #20-#40LB PowerPro braided line with #30LB fluorocarbon shock leaders. This will give you the best chance of moving and keeping Snook away from heavy structure. Whether we are fishing artificial lures or live bait I will teach you how to properly fish Snook water. This requires a quiet approach, accurate presentations, and proper fighting techniques. Snook are extremely aware of their surroundings and you must outsmart them.

Snook can live up to 20 years and exceed 50 inches in length. The all-tackle IGFA world record Snook weighed over 53 pounds and was caught in Costa Rica in 1978. The current Florida IGFA record Snook weighed 44 lbs 3 ozs and was caught in Ft. Meyers in 1984. Most of the Snook my clients catch in the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River, and Banana River can weigh anywhere between 3-20 pounds. At Port Canaveral near Cocoa Beach and Sebastian Inlet the Snook range from 8-25 pounds.
