Mosquito Lagoon
The Mosquito Lagoon is 25,000 acres of crystal clear water and lush shallow grass flats. A world class fishery the Mosquito Lagoon is protected within The Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. This shallow water sight fisherman’s paradise near the Kennedy Space Center is part of the Indian River Lagoon system. These waters are scenic and remote but not very far from the nearby city of Titusville. Excellent habitat featuring grass flats, mangrove shore lines, and oyster bars provide world famous fishing for Redfish and Spotted Sea Trout.
Redfish are known to be a near shore ocean spawner, but in 1990 it was discovered that they were spawning inside of the Mosquito Lagoon. These Indian River Lagoon waters hold the only population of Redfish known to live their entire lives inshore. This is because the Mosquito Lagoon is a high salinity enclosed body of water that receives a limited amount of freshwater. This help provides outstanding all year round fishing for Redfish including the giant adult breeders that are known as “Bull” Redfish.
The Spotted Sea Trout is the most abundant game fish in the Mosquito Lagoon. They do not migrate and usually stay in one general area for the duration of their life. This provides year round opportunities for my clients to catch excellent numbers of Trout. The sheer number of Trout that live in the Mosquito Lagoon greatly increases your chances of catching a “Gator” weighing 8 pounds or better. This is world renowned big trout water capable of producing giants.
In the Mosquito Lagoon my clients routinely catch Snook along deep mangrove shore lines, creeks, and channels. I have several areas that can produce good numbers of Snook for my clients that weigh 3-20lbs. They can be caught all year but the warmer months are usually better. There are not many Snook on the flats of the Mosquito Lagoon, mainly because of the lack of tidal influence. When the Snook bite is good I usually recommend spending a little time fishing for them after my clients catch their share of Redfish and Trout.
Tarpon are another year round resident we catch throughout Mosquito Lagoon. These Tarpon range in size from 10 to 50lbs and can be caught on the edges of deeper grass flats, creeks, and channels. Depending on the time of year, water temperature and weather conditions Mosquito Lagoon Tarpon can be caught in the same areas that Redfish, Trout, and Snook are often caught in. The Tarpon are not as numerous in the Mosquito Lagoon as they are in the Indian River and Banana River but at times the action can be good.
There are many other species of fish you may catch on your Orlando fishing charter with me on the Mosquito Lagoon near Titusville such as, Grouper, Snapper, Black Drum, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Flounder, and Sharks. I don’t usually target these species but while fishing for Redfish, Trout, Snook, and Tarpon they can all be caught.
My clients come from around the world to fish with me on the Mosquito Lagoon. This unique eco system which supports life to hundreds of species of fish, birds, and animals is one of the world’s most important fish and wildlife sanctuaries. Some of the wildlife you may see includes, dolphins, manatee, alligators, deer, wild hogs, egrets, herons, osprey, bald eagles, bobcats, and plenty of Redfish and Trout! Whether your an avid fisherman or just want to relax and enjoy the nature, wildlife, and scenery, this is a destination that you will never forget!
